May is Mental Health Awareness month in the US. At BBHC, we aim to join the pledge to raise awareness about mental illness and reduce the stigma that surrounds it. 1 in 4 people will be affected by a mental illness at some point in their lives so it’s important that we are made aware of how people are impacted by mental illness and how we can treat it.
One safe and effective treatment is neurofeedback which is a brain training treatment that can alleviate symptoms of mental illnesses and reduce the need for any medication. At Bhakti, our main objective is to regulate dysregulation in the brain using a variety of modalities including neurofeedback, biofeedback, neurostimulation, and photobiomodulation. By regulating the dysregulation in the brain, the brain will learn to function more efficiently and even extinguish
symptoms of mental illnesses.
Our brains produce many brainwave patterns including delta, theta, alpha, and beta. A healthy functioning brain will produce specific brainwaves for a given function. For example, a healthy brain will produce beta when that person is reading. Due to chemical imbalances, genetics, and/or stress, some brains will produce inappropriate brainwaves. For instance, people with depression tend to have too much alpha in their brain’s left frontal lobe while people suffering from anxiety tend to have excess beta frequency in their brains.
Through continuous reinforcement, neurofeedback can correct the excess beta and guide the brainwaves back to a healthy mode of functioning. Using Neurofeedback, we have helped many people lessen and even outright eliminate their symptoms of disorders such as ADD, ADHD, autism, depression, anxiety, stress, insomnia, addictions, and PTSD.
